The Dutch legend passed away on Thursday at the age of
68, but his legacy lives on. No other man has had such an
incredible influence upon football over the past 50 years
COMMENT
He may be gone, but his impact will be long-lasting.
Johan Cruyff changed football forever: as a player, a
coach, an advisor and one of the game's great thinkers,
the Dutch legend leaves a lasting legacy. He transformed
the sport in the modern era.
Cruyff liked to be different. Determined to succeed as a
youngster as his father passed away before his teenage
years, the young Johan (born Hendrik Johannes) honed his
skills as a footballer.
His mother worked as a cleaner for Ajax and his step-
father was a labourer at the Amsterdam club. So the
young Cruyff learned the value of hard work from a young
age and practising persistently to perfect his talents, he
joined the Ajax academy and went on to become the finest
footballer in the club's history.
Cruyff led Ajax to three European Cups and won the Ballon
d'Or three times as well. Under the revolutionary Rinus
Michels, Johan became the leading exponent of a new
playing style. Total Football. And together, the pair also
led Netherlands to the World Cup final in 1974 - losing out
to West Germany in Munich.
Despite the defeat, they won the hearts of football fans all
over the world with their pioneering play.
"We lost one of the most important games of our lives, but
I think that brought us more fame than we could ever
have had by winning," he later said. "Because everybody
wanted us to win, that brought even more attention,
sympathy and affection. For four weeks in that tournament
no one was talking about winning or losing – the world
audience just wanted to see the nice football we played.
So, it is not an excuse, it is true – the result of the final
doesn't even bother me."
Netherlands lost the 1978 final as well, but this time
Cruyff was not present. He had decided to miss the
tournament for personal reasons, but was exerting his
impressive influence in a new place: Barcelona.
Ajax had wanted to sell the midfielder to Real Madrid, but
again Cruyff wanted to be different.
"I remember my move to Spain was quite controversial,"
he said. "People said I was going to a fascist country. The
president of Ajax wanted to sell me to Real Madrid. But I
was born shortly after the war, though, and was taught
not to just accept anything. Barcelona weren't at the
same level as Madrid football-wise, but it was a challenge
to play for a Catalan club. Barcelona was more than a
club."
And with Cruyff, they would become even greater. The
Dutchman's first year at Camp Nou was spectacular as
the Catalans claimed La Liga for the first time since 1960,
thrashing Madrid 5-0 along the way in a result shrouded in
symbolism even today.
The rest of his time in Catalunya was less successful, yet
he had some stellar advice for president Josep Lluis Nunez
before he departed. Cruyff told the club chief to build an
Ajax-style academy and bring through young players as he
himself had emerged at the Amsterdam side. That way, he
said, they could compete with Madrid.
Always atypical, Cruyff then moved to the United States,
had a spell back in La Liga with Levante and led
Feyenoord to the title in his homeland when most believed
he had little left to offer.
FULL STORY | Cruyff passes away at 68
When he returned to Barcelona to continue a coaching
career he had started successfully at Ajax, it was again
amid an era of Madrid dominance. Cruyff arrived in 1988,
with Real's Quinta del Buitre in the middle of five straight
Liga titles. Nunez thought bringing back the Dutchman
could change all that - and he was right.
It took a while, but young players were emerging from the
youth team and Cruyff combined them with some of the
world's finest footballers. The Dream Team was born,
winning four consecutive Liga titles between 1991 and
1994, as well as a maiden European Cup. Suddenly, Barca
were no longer in Madrid's shadow.
In his first week back at the club, Cruyff went to watch
the youth teams and spotted a young Pep Guardiola
playing on the right of midfield. He asked former team-
mate Carles Rexach to move the skinny youngster into the
centre for the second half and play the 'pivot' position. He
adapted instantly and was soon turning out for the first
team.
Guardiola would become Cruyff's "coach on the pitch" and
Pep pulled the strings in a tremendous team that, at the
time, was the most successful in Barca's history.
Later in his reign, Cruyff suffered a heart attack and was
advised to quit coaching by his doctors. When he left in
1996, he would never take another top job, but his
influence would not end there.
Back in an advisory capacity alongside Joan Laporta, he
recommended the appointment of Frank Rijkaard in 2003.
Again Barca were successful, winning back-to-back
league titles and another Champions League crown in
2006.
But again, there was even more to come. After two
relatively disappointing campaigns, Laporta survived a
censure motion and an overhaul was needed. Rijkaard left
the club and even though Jose Mourinho was pushing for
the job at Camp Nou, Cruyff chose Guardiola.
Many were quick to point to the Catalan's lack of
coaching experience, but the Ducthman said: "The biggest
test for a coach at a team like Barca is the strength to
make decisions and the ability to talk to the press,
because they don't help and you have to manage that.
After that, it's easy for those who know football. But there
aren't many who know."
And Guardiola knew. So the baton handed by Michels to
Cruyff was passed by Johan to Pep and Barca embarked
on the most successful spell in their entire history, winning
all six trophies on offer in the former club captain's first
18 months as coach. And in 2010, a Spain side featuring
the core of that team went on to win the World Cup,
beating Netherlands in a final upon which Cruyff had left
an indelible impression - although he was much more
identified with the style shown by La Roja.
"This ugly, vulgar, hard, hermetic, hardly eye-catching,
hardly football style, yes it served the Dutch to unsettle
Spain," he said afterwards. "If with this then they got
satisfaction, then fine. But they ended up losing. They
were playing anti-football."
Cruyff was all about style and as he had said with regard
to the Dutch defeat in 1974, if he was going to lose, then
it must be respecting a philosophy. That, to him, was
more important than winning.
On Thursday, the 68-year-old ultimately lost his battle
with lung cancer, yet his unique style will be imprinted
upon football forever, and the game is infinitely richer
thanks to the influence of Johan Cruyff.
An innovator, a fashion icon, an educator, a fabulous
footballer, brilliant coach, great thinker and an all-round
guru in the modern game, Cruyff leaves with the team he
helped to build dominating modern football and with his
famous passed penalty in 1982 immortalised recently by
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Through his Foundation, his University and his
programmes for youngsters, meanwhile, he also strived to
change the lives of kids all around the world.
"Children need help from us," he told Goal in an exclusive
interview in 2009. "I educated myself on the streets. I went
on a bicycle, played football, was running around doing
whatever, but today it's always in a car, and there's no
place to play on the street. So you have to create
something different. It's the same body that you are born
with that you die with. Okay you can change a few things,
but not too much. And today with cars, computers, the
Internet and whatever else, physical education is at a very
low level and sport can do something about it."
Whatever he did, Johan Cruyff fought to make a real
difference. How he will be missed.

Reps probe secret recruitment of 909 employees by CBN
The House of Representatives on Thursday began an
investigation into the alleged ‘secret’ recruitment of 909
employees by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The controversial recruitment was reportedly carried out by
the apex bank on the directive of the Governor, Mr. Godwin
Emefiele, with a reasonable number of the beneficiaries being
children and relatives of highly-placed persons in the country.
At a session presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu
Dogara, in Abuja, the House asked its Committees on Federal
Character, Banking/Currency to complete the investigation
within three weeks.
An All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Kano State, Mr.
Aliyu Madaki, had drawn the attention of the House to the
recruitment under ‘matters of urgent public importance’.
Madaki noted that there were no prior notifications on the
recruitment through advertisements to give all Nigerians the
opportunity to apply.
He recalled that in 2015, there were speculations that the
apex bank conducted a secret recruitment, but that the bank
quickly denied it.
Madaki added that the latest development only confirmed that
the bank carried out the earlier recruitment.
He stated, “The recruitment by the CBN is in breach of the
Federal Character Principle as enshrined in the 1999
Constitution (as amended).
“The recruitment breached section 14(1); 14(3); and Section
17(1) of the constitution.
“There was no fairness, no justice in this exercise conducted
by the CBN.”
Lawmakers did not debate the motion before passing it in a
unanimous voice vote.
Dogara had overruled any debate on the issue on the grounds
that it could pre-judge the outcome of the investigation.
“This is an investigation; let us not allow any debate so that
we won’t pre-empt the outcome,” he added.
Meanwhile, the majority of the lawmakers on Thursday
endorsed the second reading of a bill for an Act seeking to
repeal the People’s Bank of Nigeria Act, 2004.
Members said the bank had become moribund and its
functions taken over by the Nigerian Agricultural Bank.
The bill was sponsored by an APC member from Yobe State
and Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Mr. Goni Bukar-
Lawan.
However, there was some drama as the bill generated
arguments among members.
While some lawmakers felt that the bank could still be
resuscitated, others held the view that it had since lost its
relevance since it had been merged with the Nigerian
Agricultural Bank.
But, the majority won the day as Dogara ruled in support of
the second reading of the proposed piece of legislation.

Judge denies Metuh’s petition, vows to continue trial
Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja on
Thursday denied the petition written against him by the
National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party,
Chief Olisa Metuh, asking for the transfer of his corruption
trial to another judge.
The judge disclosed in the open court on Thursday that one of
Metuh’s lawyers, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), had sent a petition
to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim
Auta, asking for the reassignment of the case to another
judge.
The judge disclosed this while considering an application by
one of Metuh’s lawyers, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), asking for
an adjournment due to the absence of the leader of the
defence team, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), who was said to be
on a trip to the University of Ilorin for an eye surgery.
Justice Abang said he never knew Metuh to be his classmate
in the law school as alleged in the petition sent to the chief
judge.
Justice Abang also denied the allegation that he deliberately
held back the record of the proceedings of the trial from the
defence team.
The judge, who said he would resist any blackmail, insisted
that despite the petition written against him by Etiaba,
apparently on Metuh’s instructions, he would continue to hear
the case except if the Chief Judge directed otherwise.
He said, “I want to say that I have a circular by my employer,
the National Judicial Council, that where there is a petition in
a matter seeking the transfer of a case to another judge, that
the judge handling the case shall continue to preside over the
matter until a decision is taken by the authority that the
petition was addressed to.
“On account of this circular, I shall continue to preside over
this matter until the honourable Chief Judge of this court
takes a decision on Emeka Etiaba’s petition.”
The judge faulted Etiaba for failing to serve the petition on the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which is
prosecuting the case, so as to enable it to respond to the
application.
The judge said Etiaba’s act of serving a letter with respect to
a pending case on the Chief Judge without serving it on the
other party was a breach of Rule 30(5) of the Rules of Code
of Conduct for Legal Practitioners.
The judge said, “The prosecution ought to have been availed
with that letter so that they could also be heard before the
Chief Judge takes a decision on the petition. It is not only the
defence that is entitled to justice.
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the defendants are also
entitled to justice. Emeka Eitiaba ought to have served a copy
of that letter on the prosecution so that they would have the
opportunity to react to the view expressed by him.
“There are three grounds in the letter – one: that some of the
decisions the court took were given in favour of the
prosecution; two: that the court refused to release the record
of proceedings. The record of proceedings has been released
to the defendants two days ago. It comprises 212 pages.”
Metuh and his company, Destra Investments Limited, who are
being prosecuted by the EFCC, were scheduled to open their
defence on Thursday.
The accused persons are being prosecuted on seven counts of
fraud bordering on the N400m which they allegedly received
from the Office of the National Security Adviser as well as
money laundering involving cash transaction of $2m.
But responding to a similar question put across to him by the
judge, Adedipe, who led the defence on Thursday, said, “Any
letter written by any member of the defence counsel is a
decision of the defence team.”
The judge subsequently granted Adedipe’s application for
adjournment and fixed March 23 for Metuh to open his
defence.
The judge noted that the case had already been adjourned
three times before Thursday at the instance of the defence.
He warned the defence team to be mindful of section 396(4)
of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act which he said
prohibits parties in a criminal trial from taking more than five
adjournments.

BLATTER TO APPEAL SIX-YEAR FOOTBALL BAN
The former Fifa president will take his case to the Court of
Arbitration for Sport after having his initial eight-year ban
reduced to six years by Fifa's appeal committee
Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter will appeal his six-year
ban from football-related activities at the Court of
Arbitration for Sport (Cas).
Blatter, along with ex-Uefa president Michel Platini, was
handed an eight-year suspension by Fifa's ethics
committee in December for a "disloyal" payment made to
the Frenchman.
Their bans were reduced to six years by Fifa's appeal
committee in February, with the panel stating that Blatter
and Platini's services to football should be taken into
account.
Platini has already launched his own appeal to Cas but
despite the "optimism" of his lawyers the Frenchman says
he has "rarely seen someone win against Fifa or Uefa
through Cas".
Blatter, too, has now decided to seek "the annulment of
the decision taken by the Fifa Appeal Committee in which
he was suspended from all football-related activities at
national and international level for six years".
A Cas statement continues: "First, the parties will
exchange written submissions and a panel of three
arbitrators will be constituted. The Panel will then issue
directions with respect to the holding of a hearing.
"Following the hearing, the Panel will deliberate and at a
later date, it will issue a decision in the form of an Arbitral
Award."

AUSTIN OKOCHA AT CAMP NOU, PRAISES NEPHEW ALEX IWOBI AGAINST BARCELONA
The former Nigeria midfielder hailed his nephew’s work in
Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat at Barcelona in the Champions
League
Legend Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha was impressed by the
shift put in by his nephew Alex Iwobi in Arsenal’s 3-1
defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday.
Okocha was present at Camp Nou to watch the game.
With the Gunners facing obvious elimination against the
Champions League holders after their first leg 2-0 defeat in
London, manager Arsene Wenger opted to start 19-year-
old Iwobi ahead of the pair of Theo Walcott and Joel
Campbell.
The Nigeria international put in a good shift in his 72
minutes on the pitch where he missed an opportunity to
score and was also denied a penalty call.
In a tweet at the end of the game, Okocha said: “So happy
watching Alex Iwobi (nephew) on the big stage.. I'm very
much impressed with his performance.”

National Assembly Committee Detects Fresh Errors In 2016 Budget.
The Senate and House Joint Committee on Appropriation has
detected fresh errors in the 2016 budget, the factor which we
learnt was responsible for the failure of the committee to
present its report to the two chambers of the National
Assembly on Wednesday as it had promised.
According to reliable sources, 25 fresh errors involve about
N37, 025, 238, 407 budgetary allocation.
Of the amount, about N21,623,323,649 voted for office repairs
was rated “avoidable” by the Senate and House of
Representatives committees on Appropriation.
But there were indications that the committees may have
drawn the attention of the Ministry of Budget and National
Planning to the errors.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Sen.
Danjuma Goje, and the Chairman of the House Committee on
Appropriation, Hon. Jibrin Abdulmumin, were making frantic
efforts last night to meet Tuesday’s deadline for the passage
of the budget.
The two committees and the Ministry of Budget and National
Planning were making last-minute consultations as at press
time.
The errors were discovered at the last stage of the budget’s
consideration.
It was gathered that the errors spotted by the National
Assembly tallied with the input from many Civil Society
Organisations, including CLP/ Reclaim Naija.
It was learnt that the mistakes are in the following eight
areas:
* Duplication of budget line items;
* Budget items with quantities not specified;
* Budget items with no location;
* Large amount of money being appropriated for rehabilitation/
repairs of office /residential buildings and purchase of office
furniture and fittings;
* Budget items repeated over the past four years;
* Curious budget line items;
* Non-priority budget items; and
* Wrongly classified budget items
A document obtained from the National Assembly lists the
breakdown of the errors, including curious budget line items
(N6, 411,661, 956); duplication of projects(N3,567,605, 395);
non-priority project items(N5, 422, 647,407); office repairs/
rehabilitation(N21, 623, 323, 649).
A source in one of the committees said: “We have identified 25
new errors in the budget involving about N37, 025, 238,
407billion.
“From the budget, we have discovered that the vote for the
generation of 700 MW from Zungeru hydropower project was
duplicated seven times and titled MOPWH161021632-40. For
the same project, the amounts voted are as follows N750m,
N113, 465, 000, N139, 426, 180, N126, 624, 383, N93, 767,
500 and N160, 000, 000.
“The National Bureau of Statistics projected to spend N256,
920,000 and N230, 705, 000 in the same budget on
procurement of equipment, vehicles and furniture. At our
session, we were amazed that we could still be having two
estimates for the same project. Also, the Federal Roads
Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is planning to execute
Integration of Road Reference System with N150, 940,000
(FERMA 18015998) and N15,000, 000(FERMA 18021621)
respectively.
“On its part, the National Intelligence Agency(NIA) is expected
to use N2, 479, 581, 721 as refund to states for Federal
Government Road Projects and the Ministry of Youth and Sport
will spend N1, 731, 050,000 on kitting of Armed Forces and
the Federal Airport of Nigeria(FAAN) has been allocated N340,
707, 625 for Wildlife Conservation. These are evidence of
padding still subsisting in the budget.
A document on the analysis of the budget in possession of the
appropriation committees reads: “From less than a dozen
MDAs, over N21 billion can be saved and re-allocated to
create needed jobs for the millions of unemployed youths.
“The money budgeted for rehabilitation/repairs
(N10,774,052,415.00) by the ministry of Interior alone is more
than double the entire budget of the Ministry of Women Affairs
(N3,974,395,038). “More money should rather be voted for the
Ministry of Women Affairs to be able to invest in the economic
empowerment of women.
“The MDAs will not collapse if these projects are postponed to
a future date when the country can easily afford to execute
them.
“In the budget of the Office of the Secretary to the
Government of the Federation(OSGF), Procurement and
Installation of security system has become a recurring
decimal.”
The source added: “With due respect to SGF Babachir Lawal,
we have realised that those in charge of the budget of OSGF
might have committed blunders. For 2016, the OSGF has
budgeted N1, 710, 322, 610 for procurement and installation of
security system. The same office budgetted the following
amounts in the last three years on the same item: N527,
000,000(2013); N1, 161, 356, 582(20140 and N316, 420,
274(2015).”
detected fresh errors in the 2016 budget, the factor which we
learnt was responsible for the failure of the committee to
present its report to the two chambers of the National
It was learnt that the mistakes are in the following eight
areas:
* Duplication of budget line items;
* Budget items with quantities not specified;
* Budget items with no location;
* Large amount of money being appropriated for rehabilitation/
repairs of office /residential buildings and purchase of office
furniture and fittings;
* Budget items repeated over the past four years;
* Curious budget line items;
* Non-priority budget items; and
* Wrongly classified budget items
A document obtained from the National Assembly lists the
breakdown of the errors, including curious budget line items
(N6, 411,661, 956); duplication of projects(N3,567,605, 395);
non-priority project items(N5, 422, 647,407); office repairs/
rehabilitation(N21, 623, 323, 649).

BARCELONA 3-1 ARSENAL (AGG. 5-1): MESSI, SUAREZ & NEYMAR FIRE CATALANS TO QUARTER-FINALS
The fearsome Blaugrana attacking trident were at it again
on Wednesday with a goal each, while Elneny's wonder-
strike proved too little, too late for Arsene Wenger's
charges
Two-third of Barcelona's MSN were on target at Camp
Nou to ensure easy passage to the Champions League
quarter-finals, as Neymar and Luis Suarez hit in each half
to secure a 2-1 victory over Arsenal.
Lionel Messi had done the damage at the Emirates
Stadium with two goals, and his strike partners were not
to be left out as Neymar opened the scoring thanks to a
fine Suarez pass.
Mohamed Elneny gave Arsene Wenger's men a glimmer of
hope with a fine first goal for the club, but it was short-
lived as Suarez hit back with a fantastic bicycle kick.
In the dying minutes Messi struck to add his name to the
scoresheet with a fine chip, leaving Barcelona resounding
winners over the Londoners.

Candidates, parents protest, demand cancellation of 2016 UTME
Hundreds of admission seekers to the nation’s tertiary
institutions and their parents on Tuesday stormed the Lagos
State Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, and the state
Assembly complex to protest against alleged manipulation of
the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
The protesters demanded the cancellation of the exams and
the removal of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions
Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde.
The protesters, who faulted the conduct of the examination,
described the exercise as a “big sham.”
The examination, conducted by JAMB, they alleged, was
fraught with irregularities.
The examination, which started on February 27, will end on
March 19.
While some of the candidates alleged that the board
deliberately lowered their scores, some claimed that it
arbitrarily awarded marks to many candidates.
The protesters, led by a group under the aegis of Concerned
Parents and Education Stakeholders, displayed placards with
inscriptions such as, ‘All we are saying give us our mark’,
‘Dibu must go; the only stumbling block in education
progress’, ‘The Joint Admission and Manipulation Board, give
us our real results’, and ‘The professor of test and
management has outlived his usefulness’, among others.
The protesters, who occupied the gate of the Lagos State
House of Assembly complex for many hours, said JAMB and
its registrar had “lost focus on how to conduct a successful
Computer-Based Test in the 21st century.
A candidate, Maryam Animashaun, who expressed
disappointment with the conduct of the examination, claimed
that she received three different results from JAMB.
Animashaun, who sat for the examination at the College of
Education, Oro, Kwara State, said, “I am confused. I do not
know what to do now. The first alert I received on the
telephone from the board with regard to the examination
showed that I scored 218. The second alert read 186, while
the third one read 286.
“The surprising thing now is that I cannot print any of the
results. On the website, the board claimed that I did not sit for
the examination. Meanwhile, I sat for English, Government,
Economics and Literature-in-English.”
Another candidate, Kalasuwe Adeola, who claimed she scored
220, said she obtained the same score in 2015.
She said, “I am sure JAMB did not mark this year’s UTME. If
it did, why did they issue me the same result I obtained last
year? In my printed result for this year, it was written
2015/2016 instead of 2016/2017. I sat for this year’s
examination at the Bachel Model College, Lagos, on March 9.
Unlike other candidates, I did not have any issue with my
system during the examination.”
The National President of the Association of Tutorial Schools
in Nigeria, Mr. Shodunke Olutodotun, lamented that over
10,000 candidates missed the UTME, while others had their
marks deducted due to irregularities by JAMB.
“This year’s UTME will soon be concluded. We have a man
called Prof. Dibu Ojerinde. This man has outlived his
usefulness in JAMB. He seems to be more powerful than the
country’s president.
“The protesters are the victims; their destinies are being
finished by Dibu. Most of the protesters that had their exam in
Delta State had the exam in a shrine. A lot of them got results
before they sat for the exam.
“We are appealing to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the
Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, to send signal to Abuja to stop
UTME. If they don’t do that, we will go to Abuja.
“How will someone sit for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the
next thing he sees are Economics, Commerce and
Government?”
Describing the exam as a fraud, a parent, Mr. Bunmi Elujula,
urged the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to
look into the complaints of the candidates urgently.
Apart from awarding arbitrary scores to candidates, Elujula
said many candidates had problems with their systems.
He said, “Many candidates were allocated between 40 and 60
additional marks. What are the criteria for this arbitrariness?
The strange thing is that JAMB started the CBT two years
ago, why is this year’s exam a big flop? I have not seen
candidates and parents complain this way about the exam in
the past. I plead with the authorities to look into their
grievances.”
But JAMB described the organisers of the protest as
“blackmailers”.
In a statement by its Head of Public Relations, Dr Fabian
Benajmin, the board said some proprietors, whose
examination centres did not receive accreditation for the test,
were behind the protest.
The statement read in part, “The board had approved centres
provided by these individuals to be used for the 2016 exercise.
Unfortunately, it could not approve those centres lacking in all
the indices needed for a successful CBT.
“These same proprietors turned around to organise candidates
to protest against our activities. We are not perfect as an
organisation, but we are working hard to ensure that Nigerian
education is better than it is. We have taken the risk to do the
unthinkable so as to change the paradigm.
“We will continue to call on Nigerians to give us the benefits
of doubt and with their collective support; we will give them
one of the best CBT globally. It is no news that the worst
CBT is far better than the best Paper and Pencil Test. At least,
the era of candidates pouring acid on JAMB officials, bolting
with question papers into the bush and all unthinkable
embarrassing acts are gone.”

I’ll be merciless in pursuing looters, says Buhari
Olalekan Adetayo and Ade Adesomoju
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday vowed that his
administration would not show mercy to any person in its
ongoing anti-corruption war.
He said his administration would pursue the anti-graft war
relentlessly until Nigerians began to see how the nation’s elite
conspired to run the country down.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and
Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke during an
interactive session he had in Malabo with Nigerians resident
in Equatorial Guinea.
Buhari assured the Nigerians that he would not entertain any
fear in his quest to rid the nation of corruption by bringing
those who compromised their positions to book.
“We will be merciless and relentless in pursuing all those who
abused public trust. Nigerians will see how some of the elite
conspired to run the nation down,” the President said.
He also condemned recent political violence in Rivers State,
saying the killing of people over political differences was
primitive, barbaric and unacceptable.
He promised to deal decisively with those responsible for the
development.
“We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have
given the security services clear directives in this regard.
“We will show that violence in any form will no longer be
tolerated before, during or after elections,” he stated.
Buhari promised that the Independent National Electoral
Commission would be encouraged to explore the possibility of
Nigerians abroad participating in the 2019 general elections by
casting their votes wherever they might reside.
He noted that some African countries had started allowing
their citizens, resident abroad, to vote in national elections
and Nigeria could not afford not to join them.
He identified with the desire of Nigerians in the Diaspora to
vote in national elections, pledging that he would do all within
his powers to fulfil that desire.
“I want all Nigerians to know that I respect them and their
right to choose their leaders,” he said.
The President disclosed that establishing a new national
airline was not currently on the Federal Government’s list of
priorities.
He said his administration’s main area of focus was reducing
the level of poverty.
Buhari said developing the infrastructure needed to boost
production in all sectors of the economy and creating more
jobs for young Nigerians, as well as other actions that would
directly enhance the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians
would continue to be prioritised by his administration.
He was responding to complaints by members of the Nigerian
community about the absence of direct flights between Nigeria
and Equatorial Guinea.

WENGER: I BUILT UP ARSENAL WITH NO MONEY OR HELP
The Frenchman has defended his 20-year reign at the
Gunners, insisting the club would not be at their current
level without his control
Arsene Wenger claims Arsenal have moved forward under
his guidance without any help or money.
Pressure has intensified on the Arsenal boss following
Sunday’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Watford, while the
Gunners look set to exit the Champions League on
Wednesday evening unless they can overturn a 2-0 first-
leg defeat against Barcelona at Camp Nou.
And amid calls for his resignation at the end of the
season, Wenger launched a staunch defence of his 20-year
reign: “I have no doubt about my motivation.
“I built this club with hard work and without any external
resources. If you compare the club when I arrived and how
it is today, it is moved forward – and without any help
from anybody.
“There was no money from anyone. Now I am even more
motivated than the first day I arrived. And I feel even more
pressure and responsibility to keep this club moving
forward.”

“I built this club with hard work and without any external
resources. If you compare the club when I arrived and how
it is today, it is moved forward – and without any help
from anybody.
“There was no money from anyone. Now I am even more
motivated than the first day I arrived. And I feel even more
pressure and responsibility to keep this club moving
forward.”

THE BIZARRE SECRET BEHIND LEICESTER'S FAIRYTALE TITLE BID
The Foxes appear set to pull off one of the greatest upsets
in English football as they lead the Premier League with
eight games to go, and it may all stem from one single
monk
EXTRA TIME
The secret behind Leicester City's success this season
may have finally been revealed, by a Thai monk!
Phra Prommangkalachan, a Buddhist monk, has been
visiting Leicester regularly for the past three seasons,
blessing the pitch and gifting players lucky charms.
And he believes that his visits may have had some effect
on the side's fortunes, with the club currently five points
clear of second-placed Tottenham in the Premier League
with eight games of the season remaining.
"I hang some amulets on their necks and I gave them
these fabric talismans," he told AFP .
"I'm not sure if they understood what I explained to them
about it, but they knew that it would bring them luck.
The club's owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, is said to be
a devout buddhist, and Phra has little doubt that he will
soon see the Premier League trophy lifted on the same
King Power Stadium pitch that his helicopter regularly
lands on.
"He brought monks there to pray for auspiciousness and
luck in the game, for the management team and the
players," he added.
"The team will be the number one in the Premier League
this year for sure."

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Laurent Koscielny urges fighting spirit against FC Barcelona
Arsenal face a tough challenge to turn around a two-goal
deficit at the Camp Nou on Wednesday but defender Laurent
Koscielny believes his side have nothing to lose.
Due to the significant margin achieved in London by the
Catalans, the French international admits that there are not
the same expectations for his side going into the game.
“It is obvious that we do not have the same pressure as we
did in the first leg.”
That said, Koscielny is not keen to throw in the towel and
says his side must battle until the very last ball is kicked.
“If you are not prepared to fight against Barça they will end
up beating you because they have extraordinary players. We
must be very alert and believe in our chances,” said the 30-
year-old.
Arsenal have fallen off the pace of late which has led to
them losing ground in the Premier League title race and just
last weekend were knocked out of the FA Cup by Watford in
the quarter finals.
As a result, Koscielny feels it is crucial that his side show
face against Barça to get the team spirit and confidence
back ahead of the season run-in.
“We want to get back to our normal level against Barça and
for the remainder of the season. We will fight until the end.”

Did you know: FC Barcelona v Arsenal FC
FC Barcelona host Arsenal on Wednesday at Camp Nou,
aiming to seal progression to the quarter-finals following a
2-0 win in London a couple of weeks ago.
Luis Enrique ’s side are on superb form but are taking
nothing for granted against a well-known and capable
opponent.
We have sieved through the archives to come up with a list
of the more interesting stats and facts surrounding the
highly-anticipated clash:
Barça and Arsenal have faced each other eight times in the
Champions League, with the Catalans taking five wins two
draws and just one loss.
As a player, Luis Enrique scored in each of the two group
games between the pair in the 1999/2000 campaign, first at
Camp Nou and then at Wembley.
Barça have progressed to the next round of UEFA
competitions on 35 of 37 occasions when they have won the
first leg.
The last time Arsenal defeated a La Liga side away from
home was ten years ago, against Real Madrid in a 1-0 win
thanks to a goal from Thierry Henry.
Barça have qualified in a European knockout match each
time they have earned a 2-0 win in the first leg and have
never lost in the return game with such a result in hand.
If Barça progress, it will be the third time that they have
knocked out Arsenal in the competition, having previously
done so in 2010 and 2011.
It will also mark Barça’s ninth consecutive season in the
quarter-finals of the competition.
The current holders can also seal their tenth straight home
win in the Champions League. In the last 36 European
games at Camp Nou, Barça have won 29 and lost just once.

Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment–Patient Version
After malignant mesothelioma has been diagnosed,
tests are done to find out if cancer cells have spread
to other parts of the body.
There are three ways that cancer spreads in the body.
Cancer may spread from where it began to other
parts of the body.
The following stages are used for malignant
mesothelioma:
Stage I (Localized)
Stage II (Advanced)
Stage III (Advanced)
Stage IV (Advanced)
After malignant mesothelioma has been
diagnosed, tests are done to find out if
cancer cells have spread to other parts
of the body.
The process used to find out if cancer has spread outside
the pleura or peritoneum is called staging . The information
gathered from the staging process determines the stage of
the disease. It is important to know whether the cancer
has spread in order to plan treatment.
The following tests and procedures may be used in the
staging process:
CT scan (CAT scan) : A procedure that makes a series
of detailed pictures of the chest and abdomen , taken
from different angles. The pictures are made by a
computer linked to an x-ray machine. A dye may be
injected into a vein or swallowed to help the organs
or tissues show up more clearly. This procedure is
also called computed tomography, computerized
tomography, or computerized axial tomography.
PET scan (positron emission tomography scan) : A
procedure to find malignant tumor cells in the body. A
small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) is
injected into a vein. The PET scanner rotates around
the body and makes a picture of where glucose is
being used in the body. Malignant tumor cells show
up brighter in the picture because they are more
active and take up more glucose than normal cells
do.
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) : A procedure in which
an endoscope is inserted into the body. An endoscope
is a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens
for viewing. A probe at the end of the endoscope is
used to bounce high-energy sound waves
( ultrasound ) off internal tissues or organs and make
echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues
called a sonogram . This procedure is also called
endosonography. EUS may be used to guide fine-
needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of the lung, lymph
nodes , or other areas.
Pulmonary function test (PFT) : A test to see how
well the lungs are working. It measures how much air
the lungs can hold and how quickly air moves into
and out of the lungs. It also measures how much
oxygen is used and how much carbon dioxide is
given off during breathing. This is also called lung
function test.
There are three ways that cancer
spreads in the body.
Cancer can spread through tissue , the lymph system, and
the blood:
Tissue. The cancer spreads from where it began by
growing into nearby areas.
Lymph system. The cancer spreads from where it
began by getting into the lymph system. The cancer
travels through the lymph vessels to other parts of
the body.
Blood. The cancer spreads from where it began by
getting into the blood. The cancer travels through the
blood vessels to other parts of the body.
Cancer may spread from where it began
to other parts of the body.
When cancer spreads to another part of the body, it is
called metastasis . Cancer cells break away from where
they began (the primary tumor ) and travel through the
lymph system or blood.
Lymph system. The cancer gets into the lymph
system, travels through the lymph vessels, and forms
a tumor ( metastatic tumor) in another part of the
body.
Blood. The cancer gets into the blood, travels through
the blood vessels, and forms a tumor (metastatic
tumor) in another part of the body.
The metastatic tumor is the same type of cancer as the
primary tumor. For example, if malignant mesothelioma
spreads to the brain, the cancer cells in the brain are
actually malignant mesothelioma cells. The disease is
metastatic malignant mesothelioma, not brain cancer.
The following stages are used for
malignant mesothelioma:
Stage I (Localized)
Stage I is divided into stages IA and IB:
In stage IA , cancer is found in one side of the chest in
the lining of the chest wall and may also be found in
the lining of the chest cavity between the lungs and/
or the lining that covers the diaphragm . Cancer has
not spread to the lining that covers the lung.
In stage IB , cancer is found in one side of the chest in
the lining of the chest wall and the lining that covers
the lung. Cancer may also be found in the lining of
the chest cavity between the lungs and/or the lining
that covers the diaphragm .
Stage II (Advanced)
In stage II, cancer is found in one side of the chest in the
lining of the chest wall, the lining of the chest cavity
between the lungs, the lining that covers the diaphragm ,
and the lining that covers the lung. Also, cancer has
spread into one or both of the following:
Lung tissue .
Diaphragm.
Stage III (Advanced)
In stage III , either of the following is true:
Cancer is found in one side of the chest in the lining of the
chest wall . Cancer may have spread to:
the lining of the chest cavity between the lungs;
the lining that covers the diaphragm ;
the lining that covers the lung;
the lung tissue ;
the diaphragm.
Cancer has spread to lymph nodes where the lung joins
the bronchus , along the trachea and esophagus, between
the lung and diaphragm, or below the trachea.

Cancer is found in one side of the chest in the lining of the
chest wall, the lining of the chest cavity between the lungs,
the lining that covers the diaphragm, and the lining that

the following:
Tissue between the ribs and the lining of the chest
wall.
Fat in the area between the lungs.
Soft tissues of the chest wall.
Sac around the heart.
Cancer may have spread to lymph nodes where the lung

Stage IV (Advanced)
In stage IV , cancer cannot be removed by surgery and is
found in one or both sides of the body. Cancer may have
spread to lymph nodes anywhere in the chest or above the
collarbone. Cancer has spread in one or more of the
following ways:
Through the diaphragm into the peritoneum (the thin
layer of tissue that lines the abdomen and covers
most of the organs in the abdomen).
To the tissue lining the chest on the opposite side of
the body as the tumor .
To the chest wall and may be found in the rib.
Into the organs in the center of the chest cavity .
Into the spine .
Into the sac around the heart or into the heart
muscle.
To distant parts of the body such as the brain, spine,
thyroid , or prostate .

News Getting replacement for Lai Mohammed difficult – APC
02
The All Progressives Congress says it is difficult to get a
replacement that can match the outstanding performance of
its former spokesperson, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
The APC Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said this on
Monday at a briefing with journalists at the party secretariat
in Abuja.
According to him, the party has a problem getting a
spokesperson to fit into Mohammed’s shoes.
He, however, said that the issue was being resolved and the
party would have a spokesperson soon.
Mohammed, now Minister of Information and Culture, held
sway as the party spokesperson during its years as opposition
until the party won last presidential elections.
“I think arrangements have been completed to hold the
necessary congresses to nominate a spokesperson.
“I think that should be done very shortly. In fact, the issue is
getting somebody that can be as close as possible to the
outstanding performance of the present minister of
information, Lai Mohammed,” he said.
Odigie-Oyegun, who just resumed from a ten-day working
leave, said he was glad to be back to work.
“I told you I was going on a break because I needed it. I’ve
had a good break, I’ve had a bit of rest and I’m back to the
office,” he said.
He assured that all party activities would hold as planned in
the month.

Cancer statistics in general.
Doctors collect statistical information about different types
of cancer and prognosis. Prognosis is the likely outcome of
your disease and treatment. In other words, your chances
of getting better and how long you are likely to live.
Remember that statistics are averages based on large
numbers of patients. They cannot predict exactly what will
happen to you. No patients are exactly alike and the
response to treatment also varies from one person to
another.
We have information that explains more about the different
types of cancer statistics in the section on cancer
statistics. Unless you are very familiar with medical
statistics, you may find it helpful to read this before you
read the information below.
You should feel free to ask your doctor about your
prognosis, but not even your doctor can tell you for sure
what will happen. Your doctor may use the term '1, 2, or 5
year survival'. This relates to the number of people in
research who were still alive 1, 2, or 5 years after
diagnosis. This is because doctors follow what happens to
people for several years after treatment in any research
study. It does not mean you only live for 1, 2 or 5 years.
Please note that there are no national statistics available
for different stages of mesothelioma or treatments that
people may have had. The statistics we present here are
pulled together from a variety of different national and
international sources, including the opinions and experience
of the experts that check each section of our website. We
provide statistics because people ask us for them. But they
are only intended as a general guide and cannot be
regarded as any more than that.

Mesothelioma treatment guide.
hat factors help determine a
mesothelioma prognosis?
When an individual is diagnosed with
mesothelioma, one of the first questions
they will have is “How long do I have to
live? ” This is a scary question - and a
hard one to ask - but one for which most
cancer patients will eventually seek an answer.
It is very difficult for oncologists and members of a patient’s
medical team to give a definitive answer to this query. Indeed,
every case is different and cancer can be an unpredictable
disease. Sometimes, cases that look hopeless turn out to be
not so bleak. In other cases, cancers that don’t look so bad
progress quickly and result in an untimely death.
Malignant mesothelioma is extremely aggressive and has a
long latency period. Hence, cases are usually not detected
until the disease has reached the advanced stages of cancer.
As a result the prognosis for such patients is often not
favorable; the mesothelioma survival rate following diagnosis
is usually just a year or two. That doesn’t mean, however,
that there won’t be exceptions, or that the outlook will not
improve in years to come, especially as more and better
treatments are developed. Overall, the prognosis has been
improving for mesothelioma patients over these past few
decades.

Determining Prognosis
Currently, a number of different issues determine the
mesothelioma patient’s prognosis. These include:
Type - Mesothelioma classified as one of three types,
depending on the tissues involved. The epithelial type
accounts for about 50 percent of all cases, sarcomatoid
mesothelioma is seen in 15 percent of diagnosed patients, and
35% have the mixed type of the disease. Those with epithelial
mesothelioma have a better survival rate than the other types.
Location - Mesothelioma is also classified on the basis of
location. For example, pleural mesothelioma , which attacks
the lining of the lung, is the most common, accounting for
approximately 8o percent of all cases. Those with this type of
cancer have the best rate of survival. Peritoneal
mesothelioma , found in the lining of the abdomen, is the next
most common and is diagnosed in about 10 -15 percent of
mesothelioma victims. It is generally harder to treat. Less
common types are very difficult to treat, including pericardial
and testicular mesothelioma.
Stage of the disease - The prognosis for mesothelioma cancer
depends on how early the disease is diagnosed and how soon
treatment can begin. Because of the disease’s extended
latency period, it is often not diagnosed until it has reached
Stage 3 or 4, when mesothelioma symptoms finally appear.
Sadly, many of these symptoms are common to a wide range
of respiratory diseases including many that are less serious,
like the flu or pneumonia. This often results in misdiagnosis.
Metastasis - When a mesothelioma diagnosis is finally made,
oncologists will often find that the cancer has spread - or
“metastasized” - from the location of the primary tumor -
usually the pleura - to other parts of the body, often to the
nearby organs as well as the lymph nodes. The extent of the
metastases will determine what type of treatment is
recommended as well as the prognosis.
General health of the patient - Simply put, younger and
stronger patients with mesothelioma live longer than those of
advanced age who have extant health problems. Seniors are
often dealing with issues like heart disease, diabetes, and high
blood pressure, making mesothelioma surgery as well as
traditional cancer treatments much more risky and severely
limiting treatment options.

Barcelona sold star player due to a toilet row.
A new book claims Johan Neeskens was shipped out in
1979 after he refused to help out when then-president
Jose Luis Nunes was struggling with an upset stomach
EXTRA TIME
Barcelona sold Johan Neeskens in 1979 because the star
midfielder refused to pass toilet paper to then club
president Jose Luis Nunes when in dire need, a new book
claims.
Barca Inedit, from historian Manuel Thomas and journalist
Frederic Porta, recalls when Neeksens was a star turn for
Barca and Netherlands, having been named La Liga's
Foreign Player of the Year three years previously.
Unfortunately one decision ended his Spanish dream when
Nunes reportedly found himself in a bit of a bind at Estadio
Jose Rico Perez in Alicante.
With an upset stomach confining Nunes to a toilet stall
and no toilet paper to be found, Neeksens is said to have
ignored the cries for help and soon found himself shipped
off to New York Cosmos.
The book details that fans were not best pleased at the
surprise transfer, with Allan Simonsen signed as his
replacement.
Neeskens returned to Barcelona as a coach in 2006 to
work under Frank Rijkaard but was sacked, along with the
manager, after failing to impress yet another president,
this time Joan Laporta.
So, let that be a lesson to the likes of Neymar and Luis
Suarez. Extra Time assumes Lionel Messi could get away
with not being on toilet paper duty.

Your baby cannot talk and express her feelings. So, how do
you know when she is tired and ready to nap? Well, if you
learn to read the cues your baby is giving out, you’ll know
well in advance the ‘right’ time – way before your baby has a

If your baby’s expression goes from happy to grumpy, know
that she is getting tired.
2. Avoiding Eye Contact:
When a baby is tired, she may tend to avoid looking at you
directly and may even stare blankly into space.
3. Rigid Or Tense Body:
When she is tired, your baby may have rigid, or tense hands
and legs.
4. Clenched Fists:
Look at your baby’s fists. Are they clenched? If yes, you need
to start preparing for her bedtime.
5. Losing Interest:
If your baby suddenly loses interest in her favorite toy or food,
it may be because she is tired.
6. Rubbing Eyes And Ears:
These are among the most common signs of tiredness among
babies.
7. Yawning:
This is one sign you cannot miss! When your baby is yawning,
